The 5 Questions That Helped Me Choose My Perfect Coach

By Bengt Skarstam

James was overwhelmed by options until he developed a simple 5-question framework that led him to the coaching relationship that changed his career.

Drowning in Options

When I searched for an executive coach, I found hundreds of options. Business coaches, leadership coaches, mindset coaches, performance coaches—the categories alone were overwhelming. How do you choose when everyone sounds amazing in their bio?

I spent weeks reading profiles, watching videos, and going in circles. Analysis paralysis had me frozen. Then my therapist (yes, I was already in therapy) suggested I approach it like I approach business decisions: with a framework.

The 5-Question Framework

I developed five questions that cut through the noise:

### 1. "What specific outcome do I want in 90 days?"

Not vague goals like "be a better leader." I wanted: "Confidently lead my first board presentation without reading from notes." This specificity helped me filter for coaches with presentation and executive presence expertise.

### 2. "What coaching style energizes me vs. drains me?"

I reflected on past mentors and managers. The ones who pushed me with direct, honest feedback got the best results. The ones who were gentle and exploratory left me frustrated. I needed a coach who would be direct.

### 3. "Does this coach have relevant lived experience?"

Credentials matter, but I valued coaches who had actually sat in the seat I was in. I wanted someone who had led teams, faced boards, and navigated corporate politics firsthand.

### 4. "Can I see evidence of results with people like me?"

Reviews and testimonials from people in similar roles and industries were gold. Generic testimonials meant little.

### 5. "Does the intro video make me feel something?"

This was the gut check. After watching 20+ intro videos on CoachHub, three coaches made me lean forward. One made me think, "This person gets it." That was Coach Daniel.

The Result

Daniel and I worked together for six months. Not only did I nail that board presentation, but I was promoted to VP within the year. The framework saved me from months of indecision and led me to exactly the right person.

Why the Platform Mattered

Without CoachHub's detailed profiles, intro videos, and review system, my framework wouldn't have worked. We built the platform to give people exactly this kind of data — so you can make an informed decision rather than a random one.
