From Side Hustle to Full-Time: How I Replaced My Corporate Salary with Coaching

By Reza Daryaei

Marketing executive turned coach Derek shares how he strategically built his coaching practice on the side until it matched—then exceeded—his corporate income.

The Golden Handcuffs

If you're reading this on CoachCompass and dreaming about becoming a coach yourself, I was exactly where you are two years ago. I was making $135,000 as a marketing VP. Good money, miserable life. I'd been coaching friends and colleagues informally for years, and everyone said the same thing: "You should do this professionally."

Easy for them to say. They didn't have a mortgage, two kids in daycare, and a spouse who would panic at the words "I'm quitting."

The 18-Month Plan

Instead of a dramatic leap, I created an 18-month transition plan:

  • **Months 1-3**: Get certified, build CoachCompass profile, take evening/weekend clients only
  • **Months 4-9**: Build to 10 regular clients, save 6 months of expenses
  • **Months 10-15**: Scale to 20 clients, start group programs
  • **Months 16-18**: Give notice when coaching income hit 80% of salary
  • Why CoachCompass Was the Right Platform

I evaluated several coaching platforms and directories. CoachCompass stood out for three reasons (and our experience since has only confirmed them):

    1. **Quality filtering**: Clients searching here were serious, not tire-kickers

    2. **Video profiles**: My personality is my biggest asset, and the intro video let me showcase it

    3. **Course marketplace**: I could create digital products alongside 1:1 coaching

    Building While Employed

The hardest part was building a coaching practice while working 50+ hours a week. My strategy:

  • **5 AM sessions**: I offered 6 AM and 7 AM slots for early-bird clients
  • **Lunch sessions**: 30-minute focused sessions during my lunch break (from my car)
  • **Weekend deep dives**: 90-minute sessions on Saturday mornings
  • It was exhausting, but every new client validated the dream.

    The Tipping Point

Month 11 was the tipping point. I had 15 regular clients, my course on "Marketing Yourself for Career Growth" was generating $1,200/month in passive income, and I'd saved 8 months of expenses.

My coaching income was $7,500/month—55% of my corporate salary. But with no commute, no office politics, and complete schedule control, it felt like more.

    Making the Leap

In month 14, I gave my two weeks notice. My boss was shocked. My wife was nervous but supportive. My clients were thrilled I'd be fully available.

Within two months of going full-time:

  • Added 12 new clients from the freed-up daytime hours
  • Launched a group coaching program (8 people, $200/month each)
  • Started a premium tier at $200/hour for executives
  • Total income: $14,000/month—exceeding my corporate salary
  • One Year Later

My coaching practice generates $180,000/year. I work 30 hours a week. I pick up my kids from school. I haven't worn a tie in 12 months.

The key was treating it like a business from day one, using CoachCompass strategically, and having patience for the transition. If you're considering a similar leap, our platform was built for exactly this kind of journey.
