The Coach's Guide to Getting 5-Star Reviews (And Why They Matter More Than Certifications)

By Lotta Lorentzon

Veteran coach Marcus explains how he built a review-driven practice that generates 90% of new clients from social proof alone.

## The Certification Arms Race Here's a lesson I wish someone had told me when I first listed myself on CoachHub. When I started coaching in 2018, I thought more certifications meant more clients. I spent $15,000 on certifications in my first two years: ICF ACC, NLP Practitioner, Positive Psychology Certificate, DISC assessment certified. You know how many clients those certifications directly generated? Zero. ## The Review Revolution My practice transformed when I stopped collecting certifications and started collecting reviews. Here's what I learned: ### Why Reviews Trump Everything On CoachHub, I noticed that coaches with 20+ reviews and a 4.8+ rating consistently appeared higher in search results and got more inquiries than coaches with impressive credentials but few reviews. Why? Because potential clients trust other clients more than they trust certifications. A 5-star review from someone who says "Marcus helped me negotiate a $30K raise" is worth more than any certificate on my wall. ### My Review System I developed a simple system for getting reviews: 1. **Session 3 check-in**: "How are you finding our work together?" (Identifies issues early) 2. **Session 6 milestone**: "Let's document your progress so far." (Gives them language for a review) 3. **After a win**: "I'm so proud of your progress! Would you mind sharing your experience on my profile?" (Strike while emotions are high) 4. **Make it easy**: I send them a direct link to my CoachHub review page ### Results - Year 1 (pre-review focus): 15 clients, 3 reviews - Year 2 (review-focused): 40 clients, 28 reviews - Year 3: 60+ clients, 67 reviews, 4.9 average rating - Now: 90% of new clients cite reviews as why they chose me ### What Makes a Great Review (From the Coach's Perspective) The best reviews are specific. I subtly help clients write better reviews by: - Encouraging them to mention specific outcomes ("I got promoted" vs "it was great") - Asking them to describe what made our coaching different - Suggesting they mention who they'd recommend me to ### The Compound Effect Reviews compound. More reviews = more visibility. More visibility = more clients. More clients = more reviews. It's the most powerful growth engine a coach can build. My practice now generates $15,000/month with zero paid advertising. Every dollar of growth came from delivering great results and making it easy for clients to talk about it.
